Camera Obscura (29/10/08)

A quiet band that packs a punch, I had the lovely experience of hearing them live in concert in Singapore recently. I never knew about them until recently, when Eugene, easily one of the biggest contributors to the revenues at HMV and Borders, thoughtfully got me a CD for my birthday.

I fell instantly in love with the folksy character of their music, like that warm breeze you want to throw your face into on a roadtrip in an old beat up truck.

Camera Obscura's got that abandon of rock but with so much more heart. The voice of songwriter and lead vocalist Tracyanne Campbell is distinct and endearing; her style nonchalent. The music draws you in effortlessly across lyrics that are deceptively about nothing at all. The combination is at once uplifting and heartbreaking.

Be the judge with these tracks below. I can't wait to hear your comments.

Tunes

  1. This was just such a raw rendition of the ABBA classic, Super Trooper: And..."for the record, we didn't write this song".
  2. And this is my personal, all-time favourite. A Sister's Social Agony. One particularly vulnerable moment had me choking on a tear listening to it.
  3. Lyrics
You bruise like a cherry my darling girl
Words can mean nothing to some in this world
I want you to know I thought about you last night
    I cried
Play indie rock if that's what you want
Quote Mike Leigh films it will turn them all on
I heard you were going on a first date
    That's great

    Don't apologise
Try your best not to disguise
To get misty eyed at times is fine
Sometimes it feels like you're the only one
A freckle appeared on your lip from the sun
Those kids that you run with, they put you down
    Make no sound

  4. Proving there is range in their repertoire with Teenager
  5. Something funereal, something powerful, in the way the instruments come together in Razzle Dazzle Rain makes this a haunting track.
  6. Tears for Affairs
