"In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies,
but the silence of our friends."
- Martin Luther King Jr
I am under no illusion that all friendships are here to stay. I am aware that it is possible that for no comprehensible reason someday somehow, friendships leave us (or we leave friendships). It's rather sad but like the cheap souls we can be, the idea of a possible Finiteness to things is what keeps us working and on our toes. It's as if we are hard-coded to take all the good things we've been blessed with for granted unless the fear that we could lose this, too, reminds us to be a little more loving, a little more interested in others, a little less self-centred and to truly give a little and always with grace and to take a little and always with gratitude.
The calibration of intimacy has for years been something I struggle with. As it is, to know how we feel, about self, of others and of the equation(s) between said individuals is hard enough. To have to calibrate and measure out these feelings simply demands too much of me. It's an exercise that threatens to hijack what's most honest about how we feel. Which mostly is this humble joy bursting our hearts at the seams when we have friends the way we do. One more Thank You can't be too many.
So I definitely think there ought to be an International GIRL Friendship Day that celebrates Girl Friendships. If this sounds sexist, you've read me wrong. There are just some uncanny qualities in girl-friendships that are curiously less abundant in those we share with our male counterparts(who are equally likeable).
So Celebrate! And celebrate today because you have, you know, you understand and you can.
