Beauty Presents (6/12/08)

Years ago, Dad stumbled upon an old and forsaken Polaroid 630. He knew instantly that it would find home in Diana's keen eyes and hands. I moaned about it endlessly! Why didn't I get it?!

Truthfully, Dad made the perfect choice. But I just wanted to make Diana feel bad for being this privileged. *Evil*

Diana finally relented and as a birthday gift this year, she painstakingly scoured flea markets and online forums and finally found me a pre-owned Polaroid Sun 600 (manufactured in the 80s)! Hail Diana!!

I hadn't really taken it out yet as there hasn't been an occasion fit enough. But I think I shall take it for a spin Dec 19th when we have the Christmas dinner party with the favourite people.

What's interesting about this year's birthday presents is how polarised they are in terms of technology.

Juxtaposed against the quaint find from Diana is the latest Blackberry Flip 8220 that Ken got for me.

This is RIM's first foray into the flip phone market and what a refreshing introduction. Finally, a phone that's as smart as it is sexy.

The quad-band EDGE-based Pearl Flip 8820 offers two high resolution displays. 320 by 240 on the inside and a smaller display on the outside for status messages and utilities.

It includes a video-capable 2 megapixel camera, microSD storage, Wi-Fi and USB connectivity, and a "large" QWERTY keyboard for users' messaging needs. And, in a bid to make the Pearl Flip even more appealing to consumers, RIM is playing up the phone's multimedia capabilities, including video playback on the internal display (turn the phone sideways and it switches to landscape mode) and direct management of music playlists on the handset itself.

Phew - that's some mouthful. Read more here.

So Diana has gotten me "vintage" finds from the past while Ken has gotten me a smartphone way ahead of my time.

In my own silly ways, I manage to actually struggle with both.

Something about how the catridge powers the Polaroid camera without need for any batteries, ever - is messing with my head.

The same way I'm being killed alive now that the Micro-USB doesn't work very well on the Blackberry Flip (it's an export set and that's how I got hold of it before the masses do!).

Eventually, I really want things that just work.

Like this.

Look what Diana found for me! It's a pre-owned (she likes to call it pre-loved) jewellery box. It looks a little like a doctor's kit on the outside. Clever compartments inside let me hang up earrings and all things that dangle so everything is nicely in view when I need them. It's got enough space for just about everything I own (maybe I don't own that many) and I love that you can keep it closed to it keeps dust out of your trinklets and saves space too.

This is just the kind of kit I need. Which means where there is a fire, you can just snap this shut and take all your favourite things away with you.

These days, I measure the efficacies of things in this manner.
