Child of the 80s (6/12/08)

So the American experience in the 80s is NOT that different from the Singaporean's. At least from my perspective. Below are excerpts and I found enough similarities to share - what do you think?

  1. Friendship bands were ties that couldn't be broken.

  2. You read Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Sweet Valley High. I wanted my boyfriend to be called Nicholas because "Nick" was such a cool "short form". He was Nancy's boyfriend.

  3. You know all the words to "Ice Ice Baby". I still do!

  4. You can remember what Michael Jackson looked like before he had plastic surgery.

  5. You wore one of of those T-shirts that changed colour with heat (Global Hypercolour) or one of those t-shirt rings on one side. Yes, I did. I would put it in the freezer before I wore it.

  6. You were upset when She-ra, Princess of Power and He-Man got cancelled. I actually thought She-ra was He-man's girlfriend.

  7. You remember Madonna in her cone stage. Doing the "Papa Don't Preach..."

  8. You even wore fluorescent-neon clothing... (if you can call it clothing!) My favourite one was Orange meets Yellow in highlighter shades and my best friend then and I both had the same T-shirt which we'd wear, TOGETHER!

  9. You could break dance (ok, I tried to learn)

  10. You remember M.C. Hammer. And Will Smith was the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air"....

  11. You own cassettes. I would even dub cassettes from favourite songs off the radio.

  12. You owned a pair of L.A. Gear, Keds, or Converse tennis shoes.

  13. You have ever pondered on why Smurfette was the ONLY female smurf.

  14. My Little Pony, Gummy Bears and Transformers are familiar to you. You ever had a Swatch Watch.

  15. You actually spent countless hours trying to perfect the "Care Bear stare."

  16. You spent hours in the basement building and re-building Lego cities. I'd be making "zero-point" out of rubber-bands to Mum's annoyance and I wanted to be the 5-stones All-Time Champion.

  17. Partying "like it's 1999" seemed SO far away.

  18. You knew that Transformers were "more than meets the eye". And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lived in sewages.

  19. You actually thought "Dirty Dancing" was a REALLY good film. Tracks from the film were used in my wedding!

  20. You were led to believe that in the year 2000 we'd all be living in space. And I backed up my files in anticipation of YK2.

  21. You had to change into play clothes after school. Play would be Arcade centres and Movies with McDonald's fries and milkshake.

  22. You wore acid washed jeans

  23. You can still sing 1 to 12 from the Pinball machine song on Sesame Street.

  24. You wore those wide, colourful shoelaces. I had "lace biters" that had cartoon characters that held laces in place.

  25. You still don't like going in the sea because of Jaws. This is so true.

  26. You still remember when the A-ha video was the pinnacle of modern technology and you can still sing all the words.

  27. Pac-Man and Donkey-Kong ruled, including Western Bar and Tetris

  28. You got up extra early, especially to watch Saturday Morning cartoons

Send me your memories of being an 80s child!

Also a Nancy Drew's fan... but I am pretty sure the boyfriend's name is Ned, not Nicholas. :) Ned Nickerson lah
